Contractor Job Pricing & Profit Calculator

Know what the job needs to sell for before you quote it.

MarginForge Contractor Job Pricing & Profit Calculator is a focused Microsoft Excel workbook for contractors and home-service businesses that want to turn expected direct job costs into a target-margin selling price — then check whether an intended quote actually protects that margin.

Enter expected labor hours using your validated loaded labor rates, then add materials, subcontractors, equipment or rentals, permits and fees, and other direct job costs. Add a contingency or waste reserve, choose your target direct gross margin, and the workbook calculates the selling price the job needs to support.

Build the price from the job economics

A job price should start with more than a rough material total and a markup.

The workbook combines:

  • expected labor cost
  • materials
  • subcontractors
  • equipment and rentals
  • permits and fees
  • other direct job costs
  • contingency or waste reserve

into one Total Direct Job Cost.

It then calculates the selling price required to achieve your selected direct gross-margin target using:

Required Sell Price = Total Direct Job Cost ÷ (1 − Target Direct Gross Margin)

That is the same transparent pricing logic used in the workbook itself.

Sample result

The included example assumes:

  • Expected labor: 24 hours
  • Loaded labor rate: $42.27/hour
  • Direct labor cost: $1,014.48
  • Other direct job costs: $1,050.00
  • Direct cost before contingency: $2,064.48
  • Contingency / waste: 5%
  • Contingency reserve: $103.22
  • Total direct job cost: $2,167.70

At a 40% target direct gross margin, the required selling price is:

$3,612.84

A proposed selling price of $3,600.00 produces a direct gross margin of approximately 39.8%, so the workbook flags the price:

BELOW TARGET — $12.84

Those values are the workbook's verified sample scenario.

What the workbook calculates

Turn direct cost into a pricing benchmark

  • Expected labor cost from hours × loaded labor rate
  • Materials
  • Subcontractors
  • Equipment / rentals
  • Permits / fees
  • Other direct job costs
  • Direct job cost before contingency
  • Contingency / waste reserve
  • Total direct job cost
  • Target direct gross margin
  • Required selling price
  • Gross profit dollars at the target price
  • Markup on direct job cost
  • Proposed selling price
  • Proposed gross margin
  • Price gap versus target
  • Automatic pricing-status check
  • Margin scenarios from 15% through 60%

Margin vs. markup

Gross margin and markup are not the same.

Using the sample job:

Total direct job cost: $2,167.70
40% target gross margin: $3,612.84 required selling price
Markup on direct cost: 66.7%

The workbook displays both so you can see the actual relationship between cost, selling price, markup, and margin.

Check the price you actually intend to quote

Enter an optional proposed selling price and the workbook calculates:

  • proposed direct gross margin
  • price gap versus the target-margin price
  • whether the proposed price is above or below your selected target

For the sample job, $3,600 produces a 39.8% direct gross margin compared with a required price of $3,612.84, so the model identifies the quote as below target.

Important — direct job pricing only

This product intentionally focuses on pricing one job from direct job costs and a target direct gross margin.

It does not:

  • calculate employee labor burden
  • build loaded labor rates
  • allocate fixed business overhead
  • calculate contribution margin
  • calculate sustainable overhead-inclusive pricing
  • apply sales-tax rules
  • generate a customer proposal or contract
  • track estimate-versus-actual performance
  • maintain completed-job history
  • provide a management dashboard

That separation is intentional and keeps this product distinct from the other MarginForge tools.
